Family
Therapy
The family unit is the nucleus
from which all family members respond, react and
develop emotionally. If the family
system is unhealthy, it is nearly impossible for anyone within the family unit
to be healthy.
Family therapy, therefore, is oftentimes indicated when one or more family
members is struggling with an emotional issue such as an eating disorder,
depression, drug use, etc. Often referred to as the “identified
patient,” this family member is simply reacting to the dysfunction of the
system and expressing the difficulty in an emotional “symptom”
(i.e., eating disorder, depression, behavioral problems, etc.). A New
Beginning, therefore, offers family therapy as an adjunct to individual therapy
when needed. This is especially helpful with adolescent and/or college aged
clients and contributes to a more solid, long-lasting recovery. Your treatment
provider will recommend family therapy if they feel it would be beneficial to
your treatment program. |
